  1. 1. What are the soldiers taught in "boot camp" and what does war do to these teachings? Use a quote as support.
The soldiers are taught in the “boot camp” to
    2. Who are / were the "Iron Youth" and how does this end up being ironic?
Who used to be a “Iron Youth” was Kemmerich. This ends up being ironic is that Kemmerich used to be a “Iron Youth” and many people looked up to him as a hero and now they despise him and Kemmerich hates the “Iron youth”. He writes a letter to them saying they are the “Iron youth”.
    3. Kemmerich's boots are the largest symbol of the novel. How are they viewed in different ways and what does this tell us about each character?
Kemmerich’s boots are the largest symbol in the novel and is viewed in different ways because it tells different points of views on about him. Also this tells each character that they are sympathetic to him because since his legs is amputated and he is about to die and him dying is useful because Muller needs it. .
    4. How does war replace their previous schooling? What does this say about the timeless battle of war vs. culture?
War replaces their previous schooling because it taches them more hard lessons than a school can. Even if you go to school for a decade you will learn more in war than school. This says about the timeless battle of war vs. culture is that both aren’t really the greatest place to live. Also that culture doesn’t teach you much but war teaches you a lot more because you learn it the hard way. Culture you don’t usually ever learn it the hard way because it just simple.
    5. How do we see veterans contrasted with new recruits? Where else do you see this situation in life? Use a quote as support.
We see the veterans contrast with the new recruits by them feeling old because the new recruits are much younger. Also Kat gives the new recruit some beans but tells them next time he sees them to give them tobacco as a payment. He tells them “ next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or chew of tobacco in your other hand” (Remarque 36).
    6. What does the following quote say about war? "Give 'em all the same grub and all the same pay / And the war would be over and done in a day" (41).
The quote says that if you give everyone the same things and the same consequences then the war would be over in a day.
    7. Kat is a "cobbler." Look up "cobbler" if you don't know it. How does it reflect his character? What is he good at doing?
It reflects Kat because he is very good at being a cobbler. Also that he is good at borrowing extra food without having to pay back at all.
    8. The language is simple but there are a lot of things going on in the opening chapters. What has struck you thus far about this novel? What has been powerful to you? Use quotes as support. (1 Paragraph).
In this novel what stuck to me was a part in chapter two. There was a part where Paul was saying how it is much harder for younger men to go into war than older men. He says in one part “ They have wives, children, occupations, and interests, they have a back ground which is so strong that the war cannot obliterate it. We young men of twenty however, have only parents, and some perhaps a girl” (Remarque 20). That part struck to me because it made me realize that theres a lot they do not know about and have not yet to experience which is unlucky for them because once they come back from war they may be even more lost then the elders who come back.

  3. 1. During training, Paul and his classmates were taught that patriotism requires suppressing individuality and personality, a sacrifice that civilians do not require of even the lowest class of servants. This has influenced them so much than the school lectures. "We were trained in the army for ten weeks and in this time more influenced than by ten years at school" (Remarque, 21)
    2. Kemmerich was the one that who used to be a "Iron Youth". This ends up being ironic because many people idolized kemmerich but now they despise him because he has put paul and his classmates into the army. Also, Kemmerich writes a letter to them saying that they are a "Iron Youth".
    3. His boots were the largest symbol of the novel and they were viewed differently by the other characters because Muller says that a one-legged man has no need for matching shoes so he wants Kemmerich’s boots for himself, but Paul discourages him from pressing the matter further. They will have to keep watch until Kemmerich dies and then take the boots before the orderlies steal them. This tells the dark side of the characters because they have strong desire to survive.
    4. Paul recalls his life before the war. As a young student, he used to write poetry. Now, he feels empty and cynical, thinking that his short time as a soldier has taught him more hard lessons about life than a decade at school could.
    5. We see veterans contrasted with new recruits because veterans give advices to the recruits. Since the recruits don't know what is going on right now, veterans gives advice for surviving. “next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or chew of tobacco in your other hand” (Remarque 36). We see this everywhere we go because each individuals are professional at some areas.
    6. This quote tells how lame the war is. War can simply be over when people get what they want but that is not that easy.
    7. Kat is good at getting free food and which are leftovers. Kat is a cobbler by trade, but he has a weird talent for making the most of life on the front.
    8. The thing that was powerful to me was that the soldiers were relieved after the two weeks at the front. This tells how awful the war was. They feel so saved just having some food and peace. "We were satisfied and at peace" (Remarque, 1) Also, they get adapted to the horrible environment which is very tragic. First time when their peer died, they were sad and miserable. However, when Katczinsky died, all they thought about was getting his boots from him. This tells us that people can be changed by war.

  4. 1. In "boot camp", the soldiers are taught to loose "all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important for us. And good boots are scarce" (Remarque, 21). War makes these teachings more understanding since they know that those teachings are true because of their experience from war. Since they are at a situation which they highly risk their life; the teaching is very important for them.

    2. The "Iron Youth" used to be Kemmerich. Although he used to be the "Iron Youth", Kemmerich claims that they are the "Iron Youth" instead of him. People used to look up to him; but now they don't.

    3. Kemmerich's boots is what everybody wants; and Muller thinks that a good boots are useless for Kemmerich since he is one legged. However, Paul stops Muller about this. This tells us about each character that which character has their dark side and which doesn't. In a situation like war, you can't really help since its a matter of survival.

    4. The war replaces their previous schooling by Paul remembering about the school life he had before going to war. This says about the timeless battle of war teaches him a better life lesson in a short period of time; rather that his previous schooling.

    5. We see veterans contrasted with new recruits by veterans teaching and giving advices to the new recruits. Since the new recruits are younger; they veterans feels old. "Sharp eyes and light fingers! That's what the Prussians say" (Remarque, 36). This can also be seen in life especially in middle school. Since the 7th graders are new to the culture; there is a lot to tell to them; therefore the sophomores gives them advices.

    6. This quote say about war that if everyone gets an equal amount of everything; the war would be easily over and wouldn't have any fight against each other about having more/less.

    7. Cobbler means one who is clumsy at work. Kat is a good cobbler since he knows how to earn things without loosing anything himself.

    8. Probably the most thing that stuck out in this novel was the part when he thinks back to his school life. Since we are a high school student; this can really relate to us, and if we were born in different period of time, this could of actually happened; and that makes me think a lot. Also, the part when Kemmerich gets weak leaves me a heavy scene since the quote "Kemmerich's face changes color, it lifts from the pillow and is so pale that it gleams" (Remarque, 29) makes me a strong image that he is now no longer a hero, and once he is like that; people think that he is pointless. In real life; when people are weak you take better care of them and protect them; but in war, when they are weak, they think that they are pointless and no longer care about them.

  5. 1. The soldiers are taught in the “boot camp” that they would lose all their “sense of considerations because they are artificial” (Remarque 21). Once they are in the war, only the reality in the place would matter.
    2. In this novel, Kemmerich is the one who is known as the “Iron Youth”. Kemmerich himself used call himself that Iron Youth because he was strong and his close soldiers used to look up to him. But now that he was injured, he felt foolish about the fact that once he used to be an Iron Youth. This is irony in a way when he still calls themselves the “Iron Youth”, while writing a letter to his mother.
    3. Kemmerich’s boots are the most important item in this novel. Because Kemmerich had gone through so much, just like the other soldiers and now he is suffering from his pain, the boots are what still carries his paths he had taken in the battle ground. This boots also tells about each character how they have to watch Kemmerich die first and do as how Paul was told to. “You can take my lace-up boots with you for Muller” (Remarque 28).
    4. Paul is now realizing how his school-life and war has so much difference. He is realizing that being a soldier has actually taught him more about life, than being a student. The battle ground is now a place for him to realize how valuable a day of your life could be.
    5. We see veterans contrasted with new recruits by how veterans are giving the recruits advice. Because the veterans has being through the same situations, they know that the recruits does not know much about the situation. Therefore, the veterans tell the recruits, “Next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or a chew of tobacco in your other hand” (Remarque 36).
    6. This quote is stating how war could be easily done, if people actually gave each other what they wanted and they were equally given. But in reality, people does not see they because of their foolishness.
    7. “Cobbler” fits perfectly with how Kat deals with food. He is good at finding foods without any payments because he does not care about the quality, but how he fulfills his hunger.
    8. The fact that the youngers had to suffer more than the elders struck me the most. There was apart where it talked about family, house, child and life. Paul said that a man with a wife, child, family and life has so much less pain while being in the war, than a boy like himself, who only has parents. This is because, when they are back from the war, there are less people and opportunity for them to be cared. “the older men, it is but an interruption. They are able to think beyond it.” (Remarque 20). This also tells that the more you have something in your life, the more likely you are to go through tough times. You have something to think about, which interrupts from the war, and gives you a break to your brain.

  6. 1.  What are the soldiers taught in "boot camp" and what does war do to these teachings?  Use a quote as support.
Soldiers taught are "lost all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important" (Remarque 21). These teaching are true thing from other soldiers experiences from war and soldiers situations are highly risked with their life so they need to loose idle thoughts, they need to know only real facts to believe and that makes more accurate.

    2.  Who are / were the "Iron Youth" and how does this end up being ironic?
Kemmerich was used to be "Iron Youth". This end up being ironic that he used to be "Iron Youth" and many people said he was a hero but now they despise him. He writes letter to them with empty phrases saying "We are the Iron Youth".

    3.  Kemmerich's boots are the largest symbol of the novel.  How are they viewed in different ways and what does this tell us about each character?
Because it tells about Kemmerich's different points of view and it tells about each character sympathized to him since he amputated his leg and will not live long but his dying is needs for Muller because he wants Kemmerich's boots for himself.

    4.  How does war replace their previous schooling?  What does this say about the timeless battle of war vs. culture?
Because war teaches them to hard lessons more than school can. This say about the timeless battle of war vs. culture is that culture doesn't teach much and it is simple but you can learn more from war in hard way.

    5.  How do we see veterans contrasted with new recruits?  Where else do you see this situation in life?  Use a quote as support.
We see veterans contrast with the new recruits because they are younger than old recruits, which feels old. Also I see in Kat because he said to new recruits "next time you come with your mess-in have a cigar or chew of tobacco in your other hand" (Remarque 36) to give some beans to them and that payment is tobacco or cigarets so it is a give and take trading.

    6.  What does the following quote say about war?  "Give 'em all the same grub and all the same pay / And the war would be over and done in a day" (41).
This quote said that war wouldn't be over easily like give all the same food and money but war can be over when people get what they want and it is also difficult.

    7.  Kat is a "cobbler."  Look up "cobbler" if you don't know it.  How does it reflect his character?  What is he good at doing?
Kat has a skill to get free food, and find supplies like left overs, woods, and stove but he is bad at trade.

    8. The language is simple but there are a lot of things going on in the opening chapters.  What has struck you thus far about this novel?  What has been powerful to you?  Use quotes as support. (1 Paragraph).
The novel struck me was soldiers have no rights in war so when they are saved or survived and had some foods, they feel bit of relief and peace because we don't feel that in our life. If it so, we cannot survive. "We are satisfied and at peace" (Remarque 1), "It is true we have no right to this windfall" (Remarque 2). This can tell how war is awful and ruthful.

  7. 1) Boot camp were “ten weeks and in this time more profoundly influenced than by ten years at school” (Remarque 21), and how war influenced them is like the saying “doing it is better than thinking it.
    2) Kemmerich were the Iron Youth. It is ironic becausem he didn't like to be known as the Iron youth, but he wrote a letter to his classmates that he is the Iron Youth.
    3) Kemmerich’s boots were a symbol to the novel because it starts out to be one legged taught and hard, but the way people view the use and the ending of it is different, some are dark and some are hopeful.
    4) The battle between war and culture. The war is something you prepare for and expect the unsuspected. For the culture part, it was the easy life, where there’s no pain but just a normal civilized life.
    5) The veterans gave advice to the new recruits like, “ come with your tobacco in your other hand. Get me?” (Remarque 36). We see this in life where the juniors or seniors helping out the freshmen or junior high in school events or questions that needed to be answered.
    6) It says the war will end if everyone is equal; no one gets more or less.
    7) Cobbler means a person who is clumsy at work. His character made sense with his line of work and being a cobbler, because his job is not a delicate job.
    8) The part that struck me was the death of Kemmerich. It was so powerful because when he was in pain, it was like a rollercoaster ride; first he was sad, then he was mad but after that he died. “ Kemmerich’s face … is so pale that it gleams” (Remarque 29). Also, back then amputation was not a big deal.

  8. 1.Soldiers are taught to lose “all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the fact are real and important for us” (Remarque 21). So than even are death of a comrade would not be a big deal. Or stuff (boots) of almost a dead guy can be scarce.
2.Kantorek refers Paul and his friends as the the “Iron Youth”. But Paul thinks they have lost youth long ago after joining the war. “We are old folks” (Remarque 18).
3.Muller is delighted to have Kemmerich’s boots. “He merely see things clearly” (Remarque 20). It shows how war can change someone.
4.“We were trained in the army for ten weeks and in this time more profoundly influenced than by ten years at school” (Remarque 21). The life the soldiers spent before they joined army is just false and those rules don’t apply in the war.
5.“Next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or a chew of tobacco in your other hand” (Remarque 36). Veterans gets to hold a little of authority over the new recruits. The new recruits are just young and new to the system. Where veterans have experience, they are more closer to the rule. We see this situation in life in works and sport clubs.
6.The quote says that if everyone is equal than there will be no conflict. But because no one is equal, because some of us have authority, and because we seek for more conflict is an endless journey.
7.I dont really understand why he is a cobbler. is he that clumsy?
8.“We have lost all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important for us. And good boots are scarce” (Remarque 21). This quote have struck me the most. Where war has changed men the same age as me. “Kemmerich will die; it is immaterial who gets them” (Remarque 21).

  9. 1. The narrator tells what they taught in the boot camp. He says "... we recognized that what matters is not the mind but the boot brush, not intelligence but the system, not freedom but drill" (Remarque 22). They did not taught the drills and the psychological, but they were taught how it works in the society of the war field.

    2. Kropp, Muller, Leer, and Paul are the "Iron Youth" right not, but Kemmerich used to be one as well. This is ironic because when Kemmerich used to be the Iron Youth, people looked up at him, but now, people does not like him, and calls them the Iron Youth.

    3. The boots shows the different ways of thinking of each characters. Muller says he wants the other boots because one legged man is no need for two boots; this shows how he is not sympathetic. This shows how the character has their own plans to keep others from the boots to get it for them selves.

    4. The difference between normal schooling and the war is that they learn more in the war field. They used to learn about poetry, but at the war, they were trained by strict trainer, and experiences hard works which were not been able to experience in the previous schooling.

    5. I saw the contrast between veterans and recruits by the Kats giving them advice, and how they says "Next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or a chew of tobacco in your other hand." for giving them advices(Remarque 36).

    6. I think this quote wants to say that if all things are equal, there will be no war, because there are no differences to compete or to get anger because it is normal to be equal if it is from the fist part.

    7. He is a cobbler because he is good at finding foods and supplies to survive. He does not care about the quality, if he can be full.

    8. The part that struck me the most was that in war, they experienced and learn more than the normal schooling. It's different from war, but I work out side of the school, and I learn things that I can not learn in school, so I can have connection with the narrator, although they were having harder time than me. Because they are "satisfied and at peace" when they were full. But that is normal for us, and it shows how they were suffering.

  10. 1. Soldiers are taught that "only the facts are real and important" (Reamarque 21).

    2. Iron Youth refers to Kemmerich. This end up being ironic because he is actually old.

    3. Kemmerich's boots are the important symbol because everyone cares about it and good boots are said to be scarce.

    4. War replace their previous schooling because people who goes to war need to face harsh experiences.

    5. Veterans think that since they have been working for a long time, they can order anything to younger workers. "Have a cigar or a chew of tobacco in your other hand... You get off scot free, of course" (Remarque 36).

    6. The quote is saying that if everyone gets and pays the same thing, the war would end faster.

    7. Kat is a cobbler because his speeches are long compare to others. He does not know how to condense his thoughts although he has good opinions.

    8. I noticed that the novel concentrates on the relationships among each characters. The author focuses on emphasizing each characters' thoughts or traits and the conflict they are having. For example, "Tjaden has a special grudge against Himmelstoss" (Remarque 45). In this quote, we can clearly understand that Tjaden is struggling with Himmelstoss.

  11. 1) Soldiers taught more truth about the life, tells that have experience is much important than thinking, you have to see the real. "lost all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important" (Remarque 21).
2 Kemmerich was Iron Youth before and people see him as a hero but then they stopped thinking him like that, and he hated the “Iron Youth”. But he wrote a letter and said that they are Iron Youth.
3Kemmerich’s boots are the largest symbol of this novel, and they viewed in different ways and tells about the characters. He was in the hospital, and he has a pair of boots. But he got lost his one leg and also he was dying, so he gave Paul the boots and told him to give them to Muller.
    4) Paul realizes how school life and the war has so many differences. A soldier taught him more about life more than school teachers.
5“Next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or a chew of tobacco in your other hand” (Remarque 36).Veterans can give recruits advice because they had same experience before and they know recruits doesn’t know much.
6"Give 'em all the same grub and all the same pay / And the war would be over and done in a day" (41). The quote shows how war is ridiculous. They should be equal then they won’t fight.
7Kat is a “cobbler” because he is good at getting extra food without paying.
8The thing that stuck me was about Kemmerich. He was in the hospital, and one of his leg was cut, and he was almost dying."Kemmerich's face changes color, it lifts from the pillow and is so pale that it gleams" (Remarque 29). The quote shows how he was horrible. Kemmerich, and around his people was really sad, or frustrated. But then people around him were trying encourage him especially Paul. After Kemmerich died, Paul is thinking of writing a letter to his(Kemmerich’s) mother.

  12. 1. The “boot camp” taught soldiers that experience is important and teaches us more than our thinking. They were “trained in the army for ten weeks and in this time more profoundly influenced than by ten years at school” (Remarque 21).

    2. Iron youth are the young people who came directly to war after going to school. Other older soldiers have their wives and work that were really influential to them. However, iron youth doesn’t have anything influential before the war so they don’t have anything to return too and war gets stuck in their lives. All the things before war feels unreal.

    3. Boots are seen as a precious and important thing for soldiers. When Kemmerich was about to die, Muller asks for boots rather than being worried about his wound and his death. This shows how easy people think about life. People don’t take dying so seriously anymore after seeing a lot of death in the war.

    4. For them, training “in the army for ten weeks and in this time more profoundly influenced than by ten years at school” (Remarque 21). Most things taught in school cannot be applied to real life situations. For them, war have taught them much more useful things than what school did.

    5. When new recruits came to the camp, the veterans felt superior and gave them advice and also tried to use them by giving them food and asking them to bring cigars. This happens everywhere, but especially in schools and work places.

    6. This quote shows how war is lame. The cause and the end of the war are simple. War occurs with a slightest thing or a thing not worth having millions to die and war can be ended if everyone gets what they want.

    7. I didn’t really get it..
    8. It was hard to read how people were used to the tragic environment they are in. Dying was normal as the doctor said, “ how should I know anything about it, I’ve amputated five legs to-day…to-day alone there have been sixteen deaths – yours is the seventeenth” (Remarque 32). Also when Paul said that, “we have lost all sense of other considerations, because they are artificial. Only the facts are real and important for us” (Remarque 21), it was kind of sad.

  13. 1. “Boot camp” are when Paul and others needs to “trained in the army for ten weeks and in this time more influenced than by ten years at school" (Remarque, 21) which is about three or four months.

    2. “iron youth” are showed by Paul and his other friends, even they are old, have family, children they can still change someone,”however, have only our parents, and some, perhaps, a girl-that is mot much” (remarque 20).

    3. Each character show us the different of them, the way they talk, they dress or they think, they can started from these small things to get change, because Muller thought the nice person do not needs two boots, so he only keeps on.

    4. The different between their school is in the war, is they can learn more than the normal school, they were doing poetry, training, and the really hard work, which it will spend their whole life.

    5. “ come with your tobacco in your other hand. Get me?” (Remarque 36). this show how the older men talk to the younger one, we can see the veterans contrasted with the new recruits.

    6. This quote said like they war is not end it easy, but they will still get the same money and the food. But it will end when everyone became equal.

    7. I think is is a cobbeler, because he is good at finding stuff, mostly like the food.

    8. This novel was easy to read but the part i got struck was in the beginning there has too many character, so the reader get confuse about each character, what do they need to do even they have hard time of there, because they spend the time to learned the new things.

  14. 1. In the boots camp, they were taught that “the fact are real and important for us.” (Remarque 21). They don't need to think about other things except about fighting for their country.
    2. Kantorek thinks that Paul and his friends are the Iron Youth. However, even if they are only around twenty years old, Paul and his friends are no longer the youth in the camp.
    3. Kemmerich lost one of his leg during the battle so he no longer needs his boots anymore. It is a very nice boots so Muller really wants it. This show how the war make these people become more desperate of surviving this battle.
    4. Anything could happen during a war, you just might die in the next second. Culture is just a normal and easy life without any pain or suffer.
    5. The veterans told the new recruits that “next time you come with your mess-tin have a cigar or a chew of tobacco in your other hand” (Remarque 36). This is like a high school where the senior would told the freshman how things work around.
    6. If everyone is equal then the war will end and no one gets more or less from it.
    7. Cobbler has many meaning and one of them is clumsy so that means Kat is a really clumsy person.
    8. The part that struck me the most is during the war they had to leave a man behind beuase he was hurt. “We couldn't bring him with us, because we had to come back helterskelter” (Remarque 12). They did not have the time to make sure if his dead or not because their desire to survive was greater than anything at that moment.
