14 comments:

  1. 1) I see understatement when he was talking about the change in the division. “I come up they no longer in the devastated place”(Remarque 199), it seems as if the change is not a big deal.
    2) When they were eating, Paul felt the warmth of home. “It will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong”(Remarque 201). Paul’s friends are closer to him than his family, and he feels the home feeling with them.
    3) Emperor of Germany
    4) The Fatherland is where is the battleground and territory, and the country is where they protect. The people are individual and the state is people as a whole.
    5) War is like fever because” No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn’t want the war”(Remarque 206), it is saying, they don't want it, but they will catch it and be apart if it.
    6) They need to return back the new uniform, and wear their old uniform, because the uniform is just for inspection from the inspector.
    7) Comrades are the bonds that they have between each other. All of them are together as one, they share the same” fear, same like, we are nearer than lovers … I could bury my face in them, in their voices, these words that have saved me”(Remarque 212). This shows how they got the back of each other no matter how scared or lonely they will be.
    8) Paul kills a man that betrays him; he becomes more violent when he attacks them. We never have seen this before in the novel, this a change, Paul whom only fight for his country, now also he fights for what he beliefs in.
    9) Paul feels closer to the enemies; he tried to help them rather then killing them. “I raise one hand, I must show his that I want to help him, I stroke his forehead”(Remarque 219).

  2. 1. Understatement mean to make something or someone less important than they originally were. “I hear we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest” (Remarque 199). When Paul came he was not very happy with the position his friends were.
    2. “I have an uneasy conscience when I look at them, and yet without any good reason” (Remarque 200).
    3. Kaiser was a Germany emperor.
    4. The Fatherland is the territory that with have protect and country is the whole land they have to protect. People mean individual and the states means the whole nation.
    5. War is what no body wants but it just happens. “No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is” (Remarque 206). Like a fever, a war can spread across the country and make the whole land you battlefield.
    6. At the end, they return the new uniforms. The new uniform was just for the show for the Germany emperor, other than that it is useless.
    7. The comrades are closer to Paul more than his mother closer to him. “they are the strongest, most comforting thing there is anywhere: they are the voice of my comrades”(Remarque 212). In the war, they could only count on each other so they have a lot of trust with each other. They been through so much together that they are more than just friends to each other, they are like a family.
    8. He kills an “comrades”. “But if I come out of it, comrade, I will fight against this,” (Remarque 226). He got to know the French man a little bit and know that he also didn't want this war so to Paul, they are both the same. We haven't seen this before because Paul had changed through-out this novel.
    9. Paul got closer to the enemy after the enemy was killed by him. “I have killed the printer, Gerard Duval” (Remarque 225). Paul knows that the enemy soldiers doesn't want this war just as much they do. Also they never had any close contact with enemy so they only think of them as enemy, because all the fight blind them from realizing that they are human too.

  3. 1. Where do we see an example of “understatement” on Pg. 99? Cite the example.
“I hear we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest” (Remarque 199), I am not so sure, but I think this is talking about helicopter.

    2. “I could almost weep. I can hardly control myself any longer. But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong” (Remarque 201). This quote shows that Paul is missing his family and where really belonged.

    3. Kaiser is a German Emperor.

    4. What’s the difference between “Fatherland” and “Country”, “People” and the “State”.
The difference between “Fatherland” and “Country” is how the land is defined. It is a “Fatherland”, if you call it a land where you are fighting for. It is a “Country”, if you are talking about the vision of a land. Therefore, the difference between “People” and “State” can be the same, if there is any unity; they have purpose and agreement, which can be called the “State”. On the other hand, without any of those unities, or without any purpose and agreement is the “People”.

    5. I think “fever” is telling how people do not want it (war), bur once there is, near by them, they catch or get involved with it. “No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn’t want the war” (Remarque 206).

    6. They returned their new uniforms and wore what they already had, instead. The reason why they did that is because the new uniform was just foe Kaiser and is no longer useful.

    7. Comrade means a mate, buddy or friend, since Paul or anyone at the front is away from their family and home, all they got o count on is their army crews. “They are more to me than life, these voices, they are more than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest, most comforting thing these is anywhere” (Remarque 212). This quote shows that I have mentioned and shows how much they mean to each other, in the front or on the battle ground. There are not any as valuable as the army “comrades”. They are the ones who are there to say “I got your back”.

    8. At first Paul does not kill a man… he kills an abstraction. I don’t really remember what a section like this, but I think this is showing how weak he has become. Paul is now really curious about other people’s life, because of what he had experienced from his “leave” and is realized how it is to be on the front.

    9. At the end of this chapter, Paul feels distanced from the enemy, because Kat and Albert tells Paul, “You can’t do anything about it. … That is what you are here for” (Remarque 228). At the beginning, Paul feels bad that he couldn’t save the man, and talks to the dead body, how they both have relatives to care, and have fears about death. “We always see it too late. … mothers are just as anxious as ours, … same fear for dead” (Remarque 223).

  4. 1. "We travel for several days. The first aeroplanes appear in the sky. We roll on past transport lines. Guns, guns" (Remarque, 199). This quote is the understatement of the fact that they are back at the front. At first looking at these sentences, it seems nice, but what they're actually just being back to the front where it is nothing peaceful as it seems in these sentences.

    2. "But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong" (Remarque, 201). Although the front should not actually be his home, after coming back to the front he feels that this is the place where he belong.

    3. Kaiser is the emperor. "'But look,' he announces, 'I simply can't believe that an empereor has to go to the latrine the same as I have'" (Remarque, 203).

    4. For them, the "Fatherland" is a thing that they are protecting, and "Country" is what they don't follow since they see it as a place rather than a community. "People" is the each one of it as an individual, and the "State" is people as a whole, including gerdarmes, police, taxes.

    5. Albert says that war is like a fever, since "No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there is. We didn't want the war, the others say the same thing -- and yet half of the world is in it all the same" (Remarque, 206). Although it's a thing that no body wants, many people are involved in it.

    6. They have to return the new uniform and change into the old one, since they got the new uniform just to make it look good from a view from the inspector for a short period of time.

    7. The comrades for Paul is his friends at the front. Paul feels that their voices "bound from the terrible lonelinesss and fear of death" (Remarque, 212). He feels comfortable and strong about them, and says that "we all share the same fear and the same life, we are nearer than lovers" (Remarque, 212). Being with them makes themselves feel stronger and that will save themselves and will stand by each other.

    8. At first Paul does not kill a man... he kills a "someone" who would jump into his shell-hole. "he will be just as frightened as I am; when in terror we fall upon one another, then I must be first" (Remarque, 215). This can be seen in this novel often, since war is a world that if you don't kill; you get killed. Therefore it is a must to kill others to survive.

    9. Paul feels closer to the enemies after killing the enemy. Since the "dead man is bound up with my life, therefore I must do everything" (Remarque, 225). After killing the printer, Paul feels that he must be a printer to "live only for his sake and his family" (Remarque, 225).

  5. 1. Where do we see an example of “understatement” on Pg. 199? Cite the example.
We see the understatement in "I hear we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest" (Remarque 199) because it doesn't care where it is hottest.

    2. Cite the quote that best describes Paul’s sense of home or belonging.
"But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong" (Remarque 201).

    3. Who is the Kaiser?
Kaiser is the emperor of Germany who appeared front of soldiers.

    4. What’s the difference between “Fatherland” and “Country”, “People” and the “State”.
Fatherland is where the battle land and their territory and country is where they stay and protect and people are individually separated, and state is the group of people.

    5. How is war like a fever? Use a quote as support.
Albert said "I think it is more of a kind of fever," (Remarque 206) because "No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn't want the war" (Remarque 206). He meant that it is like a cold you don't want it but you catch it.

    6. What do they have to do with the new uniforms in the end? Why?
They have to return new uniforms and wear old uniform because new uniform is for inspectors.

    7. “Comrades.” Pg. 212. Discuss. Use a quote as support 3-5 sentences.
Comrades are like brothers and buddies working together which they are all together as one. It is "more to me than life" (Remarque 212) and they all "share the same fear and the same life, we are nearer than lovers" (Remarque 212) hence it means they don't be alone and they wont scared for anything because "they are the strongest" (Remarque 212).

    8. At first Paul does not kill a man… he kills an ________________. Explain this. Have we seen it before in the novel?
He tries to justified the murder. We saw this seen when he became violent to Himmelstoss.

    9. At the end of this section, does Paul feel closer or distanced from the enemy? Use a quote as support.
Paul feel closer to the soldier because he thinks he is also in same situation with Paul and he tried to help that soldier "I raise one hand, I must show his that I want to help him, I stroke his forehead”(Remarque 219).

  6. 1. Where do we see an example of “understatement” on Pg. 99? Cite the example.
An example of an understatement that I see on page 99 is “By the time I come up they are no longer in the devastated place” (Remarque 99). This being an understatement is because Paul act as if this is normal when its suppose to be horrible. But for him hes seen it so much that he is used to it though for a person that’s not a soldier they’d see it as a terrifying place.
    2. Cite the quote that best describes Paul’s sense of home or belonging.
“back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong.” (Remarque 201)
    3. Who is the Kaiser?
Kaiser is an Emperor that is inspecting the soldiers because he wants to review them for eight whole days,
    4. What’s the difference between “Fatherland” and “Country”, “People” and the “State”.
Fatherland is the war the battle land where the soldiers are. Country is a home. The people are the civilians the people who are not soldiers. And State is the protection for the home country because without state there is no country.
    5. How is war like a fever? Use a quote as support.
War is like a fever because like how Alert says “ No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn’t want the war , the others say the same thing-and yet half the world is in it the same” (Remarque 206).
    6. What do they have to do with the new uniforms in the end? Why?
What they have to do with the new uniforms at the end is they need to return it because the uniform was just fir the inspection.
    7. “Comrades.” Pg. 212. Discuss. Use a quote as support 3-5 sentences.
When Paul says “ They are more to me than life, these voices, they are more than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest, most comforting things there is anywhere: they are the voices of my comrade” (Remarque 212). Meaning the comrades who are the other soldiers Kat, Tjaden and Albert etc are the only ones who can ever calm him down when he’s really scared even though if they don’t know it.
    8. At first Paul does not kill a man… he kills an ________________. Explain this. Have we seen it before in the novel?

    9. At the end of this section, does Paul feel closer or distanced from the enemy? Use a quote as support.
A the end of this section Paul feels closer to the enemy though his head told him he should kill the man he had no will to. “I would give much if he would but stay alive. It is hard to lie here and to have to see and hear him” (Remarque 221) Paul says how much he wants to save this man but he cant and because he cant he feels like an invisible dagger is being stabbed at him.

  7. 1. "We travel for several days. The first aeroplanes appear in the sky. We roll on past transport lines. Guns, guns"(Remarque, 199). If you say that a statement is an understatement, you mean that it does not fully express the extent to which something is true.

    2. “I could almost weep. I can hardly control myself any longer. But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong”(Remarque, 201). Paul feels the he belong somewhere when he is with his friends instead of with his family.

    3. The Kaiser was an Emperor of Germany at that time.

    4. “Fatherland” is when you call a "country" with a great patriotism. "People" are the ones who compose the "state".

    5. "No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn’t want the war”(Remarque, 206). War is the thing that no one wants just like having fever, but its just happens like fever.

    6. "To make matters worse, we have to return almost all the new things and take back our old rags again. The good ones were merely for the inspection"(Remarque, 207).

    7. “They are more to me than life, these voices, they are more than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest, most comforting thing these is anywhere”(Remarque 212). Comrades are the people that gives power to Paul for surviving in the war. Paul and his comrades go though the horror of the war together and that is what keeps them alive. Without, his friends, Paul might have died already.

    8. At first Paul does not kill a man, he kills a guy who jumped into his shell-hole. At first, he didn't want to kill him but just make him silent. However, he eventually dies. We have seen this before in the novel when Paul and Kat were trying to get the recruits that ran away from the dugout.

    9. "In the afternoon, about three, he is dead"(Remarque, 221). Paul feels closer to the enemy because he helped him from gurgling but he dies eventually. After he dies, Paul observes his face in sorrow.

  8. 1.You can find understatement “I hear we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest” (Remarque 199). We can tell that’s a good news for them, but they didn’t describe more.

2.When Paul was with his friends he said” This is where I belong” (Remarque 201). Therefore Paul thought his friends were more feel like his family than his real family. He like the situation when he with Kat and kropp.

3.He is a emperor of Germany.

    4. Fatherland is the place they have to fight for it; country is the land you have to be around a people. Between people and state, people is group by group and state is the big group make with the whole small group.

5.Fever is the happened is comes without telling us, therefore is same as war, “No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn’t want the war the others say the same thing- and yet half the world is in it all the same” (Remarque 206). No one actually wants the war to happen.

6.They use the new uniform just for showing the Germany Emperor, in the end they have to return it because is useless form them.

    7. Comrade mean the parent, the friend can be with you “ they are more to me than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest, ,most comforting thing there is anywhere; they are the voice of my comrade’ (Remarque 212). In his situation he needs a lot of truth from his friends also they needs to truth him back, therefore they can be like the really close friends.

    8. At the first Paul does not kill a man...he kills one of a comrade that betrays him. therefore we can tell the weak part of there relationship.

9.In the end, Paul became more close with others, "I write the address on an envelope, then swiftly thrust everything back into his tunic" (Remarque 225).

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1. “Somewhere or other I put up for the night, Somewhere or other I receive provisions and a few vague instructions” Paul said(Remarque 199). I can see understatement by the instructors, not teaching them where their regiments are, and give them just a vague instruction.
    2. He says that “it is soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert” when he almost cry because of his worry to his mother (Remarque 201). He will going to be all fine by having his friends around him, and also by fighting in the war makes his mind away from his concerns.
    3. Kaiser is the emperor of Germany.
    4. Father land is used when they described their political side of their country, or their political position within their nation, but country is used when they describe the nature, or including all of them as a country.
They use people “as a whole”, but states are expressing the political states, such as “Gendarmes, police, taxes”(Remarque 205).
    5. Albert expresses war as a fever by saying that “No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is”(Remarque 206). No one wants to have a war, but when they realise, almost all of the world were involved.
    6. They have to return their new uniforms back, and wear the old one. They were wearing the new one because the inspector came to the front to check, but after they went home, they changed to the old uniform.
    7. Paul says “They are more to me than life, these voices, they are more than motherliness and more than fear”(Remarque 212). For him, comrades were more family like than his real family. They give him comfort when he was almost destroyed by the fear and loneliness.
    8. I only found him killing the enemy, which was the first time, killing by hand-to-hand. After stabbing him, he felt bad, and nursed him, but it was too late so the enemy died.
    9. He feels closer to the enemy. This can been seen when Paul was hiding in the shell hole, and the other soldier came in and Paul stabbed him. Paul regret to his action, and so he stayed with the soldier until he is dead. “I would give much if he would but stay alive” felt Paul(Remarque 221).

  10. 1. We see an example of “understatement” on Pg. 199. “I hear we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest. That does not sound cheerful to me” (Remarque 199).
    2. When Paul met up with his friends, “We arranged our sacks of straw side by side” (Remarque 200). Paul was happy to see his friends again, happier than seeing his family.
    3. The Kaiser is the German Emperor.
    4. A “Country” could be any nation in the world, but “Fatherland” is where we (our father) came from. Fatherland is where we were born and raised.
    5. War is like a fever, “No one particular wants it, and then all at once there it is” (Remarque 206).
    6. They have to return the new uniform and wear the old ones. The new uniform is for inspectors.
    7. Comrades are mates, buddies or friends, since everyone at the front is away from their family and home, all they got is their army crews. “They are more to me than life, these voices, they are more than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest, most comforting thing these is anywhere” (Remarque 212). These words mean that comrades are very important to each other, in the front or on the battle ground. We fight together, and we die together.
    8. Paul kills one of the comrades who betrays him.

  11. 1. "That does not sound cheerful to me" (Remarque 199). Instead of saying "nasty" or "awful", Paul is understating by using "not".

    2. "But it will soon be alright again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong" (Remarque 201). Paul seems to feel comfortable when he is with his best frinds rather than his family.

    3. Kaiser is an emperor who came from Russia.

    4. Country is big and general but fatherland refers to particular or specific region. State is a government and people are the one who lives under that government.

    5. "No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is" (Remarque 206). War comes suddenly and you need to stick to it until it calms down like an actual fever.

    6. Paul returns the new uniforms and he wears the old one again.

    7. To Paul, comrades are an important part of his life and he could not live without them. "I belong to them and they to me; we all share the same fear and the same life" (Remaruque 212). He feels safe and strong when he is spending time with them.

    8. Paul kills someone who went into the shell-hole. He shot before knowing who or what it was but soon he notices that he had killed his comrade. We have not seen it before in the novel.

    9. Paul feels closer from the enemy because Kat and Albert said, "You can't do anything about it. What else could you have done? That is what you are here for" (Remarque 228). They told that killing a person is not a big thing.

  12. 1. We see understatement in expressing the front. “I come up they no longer in the devastated place”(Remarque 199).
    2. He feels crying being with Kat and Albert in the front. He feels that “this is where I belong” (Remarque 201).
    3. Kaiser was the German emperor.
    4. Fatherland is somewhere you protect. And country cannot offend each other. State is everyone in the country and people is the few. State is the majority and the people is few of them who profit from the war.
    5. War is like a fever where “no one in particular wants it, and then all at once thee it is” (Remarque 206). Just like they didn’t want the war, but 1/2 the world is involved.
    6. They returned their new uniform and got back their old uniform. They had the new uniform just for to look good when Kaiser inspected the front.
    7. What the comrades went through together cannot be described in words. Just the voices of the comrades makes Paul relax. “they are more to me than life”, “most comforting”, “we all share the same fear” and the experience and life together have made them become “comrades” (Remarque 212). They have become part of themselves.
    8. At first Paul does not kill a man… he kills an “abstraction” (Remarque 223). What Paul stabbed was the abstraction and if he knew that they enemy are men like him than he would not have killed him.
    9. He feels closer by knowing the enemies name and part of his life. He calls the enemy “comrade” (Remarque 226).

  13. 1. Paul hears that “we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest” (Remarque 199). It sounds like a cool and strong group but that is not the case. They are sent to the worst places in the war and they were having a lot of losses.

    2. By coming back to the battlefield where all his friends are, he had realized that “this is where I belong” (Remarque 201). Although he missed his mother while he ate the potato-cake, he had realized this was his real home.

    3. Kaiser is the emperor of Germany.

    4. Fatherland would be your territory where you are protecting. Country can be the whole or the political people who makes decisions to join the war. State is the people in whole and the People are each one of them.

    5. War is like a fever because “no one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is” (Remarque206). People don’t want it and they don’t even think about it but it just comes naturally and you have to get involved in it.

    6. They returned their new uniforms back and wore their old ones. They were wearing it because Kaiser came to the area but since they have scarce supplies of clothes they had to return it.

    7. “Comrades” (Remarque 212) are those friends you fight with in the war. They are “more to me than life…they are more than motherliness and more than fear” (Remarque 212) because they “share the same fear and the same life” (Remarque 212). Comrades are those who they really trust and can understand each other. They are more than a family.

    8. He killed an “abstraction” (Remarque 223). He just saw his enemies as enemies. He did not think as them as individuals so it was easy for him to stab him at first but he realizes that the enemies are normal men like what he is and felt sorry for them.

    9. Paul got closer to the enemy. After stabbing him, they were in the same trench for a long time. Since Paul felt sorry for him and as his sympathy builds up he got closer to the enemy. Throughout the time together, he was fetching him water and figured out he “killed the printer, Gerard Duval” (Remarque 225). Though later on he managed to distance his sympathy towards Gerard so that he can fight again.

  14. 1)“ I hear we have become one of the flying divisions that are pushed in wherever it is hottest. That does not sound cheerful to me” (Remarque 199).

2)“But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong”(Remarque 201). When he went back to his hometown he didn’t realized that place is not where he’s suppose to be, but after he went back to front, he realized that place is now where he belongs.

3)I think Kaiser is an emperor in Germany

4)The Fatherland is the place they battle and the country is the place where they live, stay. The people is a group of humans, and state is like a whole together.

5)War is like fever because the quote says “ No one in particular wants it, and then all at once there it is. We didn’t want the war, the other say the same thing - and yet half the world is in it all the same” (Remarque 206).
