Blog # 4 - All Quiet on the Western Fron

1.  Paul gets angry at the nuns for praying.  This may seem like a small affair, but what are the larger implications of this scene?

  1. 1. The larger implications of this scene are that the soldiers can't sleep during the night. If they don't sleep, their wounds won't get better so Paul throws a bottle at them and nuns finally close the door.
    2. "Whoever has a shooting license can do just whatever he pleases"(Remarque, 253). Having a "shooting license" means that the person can do whatever he wants. Basically, the person has a mental problem so people don't care what he does.
    3. Once someone is taken to the Dead Room, the person never returns. The Dead Room is for the people who are almost dead and they are taken to the Dead Room in order to allow other patients to use their beds.
    4. They tell him he is going to the bandaging ward. He knows its a trick because nun removed his tunic from the hook and put it on the trolley.
    5. "you don't have them anymore; you have club feet instead, and have to walk all the rest of your life on sticks"(Remarque, 259). They will cut off your feet and replace with the wooden club.
    6. When he was having a dinner, nun leaves a fork on his table. He grabs that fork and stabs his own heart as hard as he can. It needed 3 men to stop him from killing himself.
    7. "A man cannot realize that above such shattered bodies there are still human faces in which life goes its daily round" (263). - Even though the soldiers are wounded and they don't look like human anymore, they still have feelings inside their bodies but people don't realize that.
    "I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another" (263).- Paul thinks that the war is people slaying each other with no reasons. They just kill each other because people ordered them to.
    8. Detering sees a cherry tree blossoming one day. He takes a branch from the tree with him, reminding himself of his orchard at home, which is full of cherry trees. He deserts the army a few days later. Foolishly, he tries to go back home instead of fleeing to Holland, and he is captured and tried as a deserter. The Second Company never hears from him again.

    11. Paul painstakingly carries him to the dressing station while shells crash around him. Kat is the only friend Paul has left in the army. When he reaches the station, still carrying Kat, he discovers that Kat has been hit in the head by a fragment from an exploding shell.
    12. An enemy shoots Müller point-blank in the abdomen. His agonizingly painful death lasts half an hour. Paul receives Müller’s boots, which once belonged to Kemmerich.

  2. 1. This scene shows that Paul and all the other soldiers are no longer showing any respect towards their prayers. This is where the “Lost Generation” is shown. They’ve lost faith and hope towards their God.

    2. Having a “shooting license” mean they “can do just whatever he pleases” (Remarque 253). In this section, Joseph has the shooting license and says that he “got a crack in head they presented me with a certificate to say that I was periodically not responsible for my actions” (253), this is also saying that whatever he does, people does not bother him whatever he does.

    3. Once you’ve been taken to the dead room, you know that you are going to die.

    4. They are saying that they are taking him to the bandaging ward. But he realizes that he was tricked, because they took the tunic and cries that he’ll be back. Which no man came back after being taken to the dying room.

    5. When soldiers’ feet are injured, the chief surgeon cut the soldiers’ feet and gives them “club feet instead, and have to walk all the rest of your life on sticks” (Remarque 259).

    6. The new arrival stubbed his own heart with the fork that one of the sisters left, he was using all his force and might, three men got up to stop him.

    7. “A man cannot realize that above such shattered bodies there are still human farces in which life goes its daily round” (Remarque 263). This quote is stating how life and humans can be seen differently. This is saying that even though they are tortured and have different kind of injuries, they all have the same heart and life everybody lives.
    “I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another” (Remarque 263). This is showing how Paul is frustrated about killing one another for no reason. Making one another a useless human being no knowledge of what life is, and how it would be, without war, or the war is over.

    8. Detering picked the cherry branches, because he said that he has a big orchard with cherry trees at home. The next morning, he left the army to get back to his home, but obviously, things does not always work that easily, and Detering was caught the military police.

    11. When Kat was injured, Paul took him to a safer place, the dressing room. But after few minutes, Paul is awaked by a voice and he tells Paul that Kat is dead. Paul does not wish to believe what ha is being told and seeing. Kat was shot was shot by a splinter in the head. Kat put himself to the situation to save Paul’s life.

    12. The boots that belonged to Kemmerich, Muller used it as a second-hand, but after Muller’s dead, Paul received it. “I wear them, for they fit me quite well” (Remarque 279).

  3. 1.Paul was angry because they couldn’t sleep at night, Paul wants the other soldiers have a nice sleep, so one men throw the bottle to the nuns to make they close the door.
    2.“That doesn’t matter, I have a shooting license. Then of course, we all understand. Whoever has shooting license can do just he pleases” (Remarque 253). Having the shooting license means they can shoot whatever they wish.
    3.“Dead room” basically just means you will die for sure, and you are just waiting to die, and once the person going to the dead room, they will never return.
    4.Paul is get take to the bandaging bed, he found out because the sister make the mistake of removing his tunic from the hook and putting it in the trolley.
    5.“We will just do a small operation, and then you will have perfectly sound feet” (Remarque 259). The doctor will cut the places won’t get better.
    6.Because the sister got call away and she left the fork on his table, and he just gropes the fork to his heart and push in really hard, to kill himself.

    11.Because Paul is the only friend Kat has, so he so Kat carry him to the station, he want to cover all the gun for Paul, when Paul realize, Kat was already got hit.
    12.The boot for those soldiers is like their second life, when Muller got shoot, he still holding his boot for more than hours, after he died, they bring the boot to the Kemmerich.

  4. 1)Paul gets angry at nuns because they were praying and singing early in the morning, and they didn’t close the door. Paul really wanted them to close it and still wanted to sleep, so he threw the battle in the middle of nuns.
    2)"Whoever has a shooting license can do just whatever he pleases"(Remarque, 253). This quote shows that he can throw whatever he wants because he has a license.
    3)Dead room is for the person who’s dying soon. There’s only two beds in that room, and a guy was taken to dead room because he was dying.
    4)Sister told him that she’s taking him to the bandaging ward, but she made a mistake.“But the sister makes the mistake of removing his tunic from the hook and putting it on the trolley, too, so that she should not have to make two journeys” (Remarque 258).
    5)“He operates on you fro flat feet, and there’s no mistake, you don’t have them anymore; you have club feet instead, and have to walk all the rest of your life on sticks”(Remarque 259).
    6)“He gropes for the fork, seizes it and drives it with all his force against his heart, then he snatches up a shoe and strikes with it against the handle as hard as he can” (Remarque 261). They need three people to take knife from him and stop.

The surgeon’s clerk showed him X ray photographs, and he was completely smashed his hipbones, knees, and shoulders, but a cannot realize that the solders have those injures but still alive and living their daily life.
    "I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another" (263). Peoples are se against one another. This is saying about the war. How people killing each other with no reason.
    8)He sees a cherry tree in a garden. He took couple of branches of cherry blossom. “I have a big orchard with cherry trees at home. When they are in blossom, from the hay loft they look like one single sheet, so white. It is just the time” (Remarque 276). So he the tree just reminding him of his past. At the end he get to leave.
    9)“ We are emaciated and starved” (Remarque 280). Many people starved because of not enough food, or bad living conditions makes them ill.
    10)“There are too many fresh English and American regiments over there”(Remarque 280).
    11)Paul jumped up and helped him while they’re shelling. He took him to the dressing station. “I take him up and start off at a run, a slow steady pace” (Remarque 289). But Kat dies because he has caught a splinter in the head. “There is just one little hole, it myst have been a very tiny stray splinter”(Remarque 291). He was really shocked because only Kat is a friend who left in the army.
    12)Muller died because someone shot him. But he lived for half an hour in terrible pain. Before he died he gave his pocket book to Paul, and bequeathed him his boots, which once inherited from Kemmerich.

    The larger implications of this scene is that soldiers cannot sleep in night because if they have lack of sleep, their injury won't get better so Paul aim the bottle at them and finally they shut the door.

    Having shoot license means that the person who has shooting license can do whatever they want so people do not care what he does. "Whoever has a shooting license can do just whatever he pleases" (Remarque 253).

    Kat was only friend that left in army. Kat was talking to him 10 minutes before but when he awake, Kat was dead. Kat was killed by a splinter in the head. He saved Paul's life putting himself in the situation.

    It is true because the boots that belong to Kemmerich was passed to Muller, and now Muller is dead so Paul received the boots. "I wear them, for they fit me quite well" (Remarque 279).

    1. I am not sure about the correct answer this scene r, but implication behind this scene is that nurses are prioritizing prayers than patients. Even though Paul and his fellows are injured and they are at hospital to have rest and heal. However, nurses are the one who is disturbing them.
    2. Shooting license is a license that people who gone crazy and can not have responsibility in his action can have. Therefore, people who have shooting license “can do just whatever he pleases” (Remarque 253).
    3. Once you are taken to dead room you will not come back. This is because dead room is for people who will die eventually and cannot do any thing anymore.
    4. Sisters told him that they will take him to the bandage room. He realized that it was a trick because they took his tunic off.
    5. The medical experiments that they are trying on soldiers are special scientific stunt, which makes your injury even worse. Also, once doctor starts operating, “ he goes absolutely crazy whenever he can get hold of anyone to do it on” (Remarque 259).
    6. The new arrivals try to kill himself with a folk that sister left when she was called away. He took folk and stabbed against his heart as hard as he could.

  7. 1. Paul was angry at the nun for praying because the nun's prayer was annoying him, he couldn't sleep with all those noise. So Paul decide to tell another man to throw a bottle at the nun so they would close the door. Partly was for himself and also letting another soldier to have a nice sleep.
    2. A shooting license is a free pass, “Whoever has a shooting license can do just whatever he pleases” (Remarque 253). People would just let you off the hook because they think your just crazy.
    3. When you are been taken into the dying room that mean you are going to die soon.
    4. They told Paul that they are taking him to the bandaging ward but Paul know that it was a lie. He notice that they took his tunic away so he knew that they are actually taking him to the dying room
    5. The medic only cut off their feet and replace it with “club feet instead, and have to walk all the rest of your life on sticks” (Remarque 259). They don't treat them properly, they just throw away the broken one and replace with a stick and expect to get away from it.
    6. The new arrival was planning on stabbing himself with the fork that his sister left there. However, he was stop by the three other men in the room.
    7. These bodies had been shattered by the affect of the war, people just don't get that these bodies are living people. They are only human who should only be having a normal life and natural death.
    Soldier are clueless of what they are doing on the battle field. They are like a kid, does everything they are told but never really know why they are doing it. All these soldiers fought against who they think it's the enemy but technically they are all the same, just human.

    12. The boots use to belong to Kemmerich then Muller; but now that Muller is dead, Paul took the boots. From the beginning Paul already knew something like this would happen so that why he did not bother to fight for the boots.

    2.this means that they can do what ever they want. And people would not really talk back to that person for doing it. And thanks to this, they could do what ever they wanted to.
    3.the dead room is for people who are going to die, or people who have no hope in surviving. By being taken to the dead room meant that you are going to die sooner or later.

  9. 1. Paul being angry to the nuns shows how he doesn’t have any respect or interest towards them and religion anymore. War made them hard to believe god and other spiritual things. They are the lost generation.

    2. Having a shooting license mean they “can do just whatever he pleases” (Remaruque 253). Since he has an injury in his head he doesn’t have any responsibility for his own actions so he can do whatever he wants.

    3. Dead room is for those who are about to die so if people are sent there, they usually don’t return. They send them to the dead room so that the beds will be open for other patients.

    4. They trick him to take him to the dying room by saying that they are taking him to the bandaging room. Though he realizes soon because sister took off the tunic and put it on the trolley.

    5. The doctors tell the patient that they will fix their flat feet but they actually cut off their feet and you will “have club feet instead, and have to walk all the rest of your life on sticks” (Remarque 259).

    7. The first quote shows how unbelievably many soldiers are injured but they actually live their life. By looking at their injury it seems like everything is over to them but they actually has feelings and still are living. The second quote shows how Paul is sick of this situation. By thinking back to the fights remembering how people kill enemies that hey don’t know and without any reason. He is still young but he only knows fear and all the depressing things from war.

    8. He saw the cherry blossom and remember his home. He became homesick and attempted to escape the camp but the police caught him.

    9. “We are surrounded. It is not easy to surrender, fog and smoke hang over us, no one would recognize that we wanted to give ourselves up, and perhaps we don’t want to, a man doesn’t even know himself at such moments” (Remarque 278). They are surrounded by the enemies and they are even thinking about surrendering and everyone knows that in “a few minutes and we are lost” (Remarque 278).

    10. They are fighting against two countries and they are losing against them because “ there are too many fresh English and American regiments” (Remarque 280).

    11. Although Kat was alive 10 minutes ago, “without my having noticed it, Kat has caught a splinter in the head”(Remarque 290-1) and died. If Paul weren’t carrying Kat, he would’ve gotten that splinter so that means Kat saved Paul’s life.

    12. The boots have been passed from soldier to soldier as each of them dies so when someone gets a good boots from a soldier that foretells that he is going to die too.

    13. I would choose the word “Horror” because this explains how war is. War is a horror to many people since it kills people and leaves damage to their hearts. The word also expresses the scenes of carnage that was shown throughout the book.

  10. 1) The large implication is Paul does not believe in religion anymore. This caused him to be angry with the nuns for praying, because it is annoying for him.
    2) A shooting license is a license that is given whom is mentally ill, so from their entire mistake, the license gave the ill person a reason, to their behavior. “Whoever has a shooting license can do just whatever he pleases”(Remarque 253).
    3) If you were brought to the dead room means, you're a lost cause and you will die.
    4) They are taking Paul to the bandaging ward, but he knows it's a trick because his tunic was put in the trolley by mistake.
    5) They test medical achievement on them, “you have club feet instead, and you have to walk the rest of your life with a stick “(Remarque 259).
    6) The new recruit took the fork, and stabs them selves with it, as an attempt of suicide.
    7) The soldiers fighting each other are foolish, because on the battle field they seems blind, but outside the battle field they had a life. The action of fighting is stupid.

  11. 1.This scene shows how Paul lost faith toward religion and the existence of God after being in the Front. He gets irritated by nuns who are praying, who still have hope for the future. Where the Paul and the rest even lost that hope.
    2. If you have a “shoot license” than you “can do just whatever he pleases” (Remarque 253). If you have a “shoot license” than you are seen as insane where you are not responsible for their own actions. Because they got a shot in their head.
    3.Once you’ve been taken to the dead room, you no longer return and you know that you are going to die soon.
    4.They tell Peter that they are taking him to the bandaging room. But Peter finds out that he is tricked because the sister removes his tunic from the hook and puts it “on the trolley, too, so that she should not have to make two journeys” (Remarque 258). This tells him that he is not coming back to this room, which means he’s going to be in a dying room.
    5. “What he wants is little dog to experiment with” (Remarque 259). He makes the soldiers cripples by “operates on for your flat feet” and instead “you have club feet” (Remarque 259). And “catches them again and breaks their bones fresh” (Remarque 260).
    6.The new arrival attempt to kill himself by groping “for the fork, seizes it and drives it with all his force against his heart, then he snatches up a shoe and strikes with it against the handle as hard as he can” (Remarque 261).

    It is hard to tell that among all the bodies that’s on the ground shattered, there used to be a life among those faces. And they lived.

    Without doing anything directly to each other, people are hurting each other.
    8.Because it reminded him of home. He escapes the army for home but he gets caught.

    The boot belonged to Kemmerich. He passed it on to Muller when he died. And when Muller died, Paul received it. They died in that order.

  13. 1. The larger implication of this scene is that Paul gets angry at the nuns and after a count of five, throws a bottle to the nun to close the door and not to disturb them. At first nuns doesn't listen to him, saying this is praying, but now Paul and the others doesn't believe in God and prefers to be quiet.

    2. having a shoot license means that you have a shoot license, therefore you have shot many people before, and therefore it proves that it can't help for him to go insane. "That doesn’t matter, I have a shooting license. Then of course, we all understand. Whoever has shooting license can do just he pleases” (Remarque 253).

    3. Once you've been taken to the dead room, you are hopeless now to live since the nurse has decided that they will not help anymore, even though in a serious danger, since they would rather help the ones that still has a hope that the will survive.

  14. 1. The nuns said that praying is better than sleeping. This made Paul angry because for Paul, resting is one of the most important things.

    4. Paul was supposed to be taken to the bandaging ward. He notices this trick by the nun's mistake.

  15. 1. Paul and other soldiers do not care about showing respect to nuns; they want to rest. The Lost Generation lost their hopes, dreams, and faith.

    2. Having a “shooting license” means that they “can do just whatever he pleases” (Remarque 253). Although Paul was the one who threw the glass bottle, Joseph said that he did it because he has “shooting license. It also means that you are stupid that no one can control you.

Paul does not remember anything that happened, except Kat's death. Kat was shot was shot by a splinter in the head. Kat put himself to the situation to save Paul’s life. 

    12. Boots belonged to Kemmerich, Muller wore them, but after Muller’s dead, Paul received them. “I wear them, for they fit me quite well” (Remarque 279).
