  1. 1. Not really. “At that point I yawned” (Camus 45). Even when his mothers topic comes out he seems not to have much interest toward it.
    2. “He’d beaten her till she bled” (Camus 31).
“A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so” (Camus 55).
“Marie said she’d stay and help Madame Masson with the dishes” (Camus 52).
    3. First of all Mersault does not love her. Second, he does not care. Third, he think it won’t “make any difference” so “we could if she wanted to” (Camus 41).
    4. Until this scene I thought Camus dealt with the environment positively but in the last scene negative. So I thought Camus deals with the environment neutrally. “The sea carried up a thick, fiery breath” (Camus 59).
    5. To me he seems not to regret his crime. It feels like its much lighter. And if he really regrets than he would not shoot another four times. He was already not too happy when it was becoming too hot.
6.The lifestyle in Tangiers seem to be really nice and appealing. There has been many scene where Mersault wanted to take a walk or was glad to take a walk. Besides the Arab business the Tangiers seems to be a chill place to live. Good food and environment. Maybe a little hot. “The sun was shining almost directly overhead onto the sand, and the glare on the water was unvearable” (Camus 52).
    7. Marriage – “I said it didn’t make any difference” (Camus 41).
Problem/Authority – “She asked me to go find a policeman, but I told her I didn’t like cops” (Camus 36).
Mother’s death – “Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know” (Camus 3).
    8. Mersault would strongly agree with this. One thing that’s really missing from Mersault is ambition. He does not have a desire to marry or to move to France. He has no strong interest toward the work.

  2. 1. Does Salamano's grief over his dog impact Mersault?
No Salamano’s grief over his dog does not impact Mersault but he learns about things he did not know before Salamano came over griefing about his dog.
    2. Pretend you are a Feminist critic. There are abundant examples of misogyny; please cite 3 examples.
-When Raymond abuses his girlfriend when she had cheated on him.
-When Marie asks Mersault if he ever wants to marry but he answers back by saying if she wants too and doesn’t really care.
    - How Raymond would thought how his girlfriend that cheated on him would come back to him.

    3. Why do you think Mersault doesn't care if he is married or not?
Mersault doesn’t care about being married because he see no point to it, doesn’t really matter and the fact that he doesn’t really care about anything.

    4. Mersault, while not looking for an excuse, partially blames the murder on the environment. What does this say about the way Camus deals with the environment? Is it positive? Negative? Neutral? Use a quote as support.
“ All I could feel were the cymbals of sunlight crashing on my forehead and, indistinctly, the dazzling spear flying up on from the knife in front of me.” (Camus 59) The way Camus deals with the environment is neutral because from here Mersault was happy and handling things well until he saw the Arab and fron there it went down hill.

    5. When Mersault commits the murder, he shatters "the harmony of the day, the exceptional beach where [he'd] been happy" (58). Does this imply that he regrets his crime?
I think he does regret it but he still doesn’t care. He seems to more care that after what happened had ruined the day and ruined his mood.

    6. Describe the lifestyle in Tangiers. Does it seem appealing? Think of the environment, the city and the beach. How about the weather? Use one quote as support.
The lifestyle of the Tangier to sounds like a appealing place. “ dark mass of rock surrounded by a blinding halo of light and sea spray.” (Camus 57) reading all the details about the beach It would make me want to be there but knowing the situations about them and the Arab is what would take all the appeal away.
    7. Cite three things Mersault is indifferent towards.
Death- “ I knew that I had shattered the harmony of the day, the exceptional silence of a beach where I’d been happy. Then I fired four more times” (Camus 59)
Marriage- “It didn’t really matter” (Camus41)
Love- “ It didn’t mean anything” (camus 41)
    8. "Ambition is futile". Would Mersault agree or disagree?
Mersault does agree with “Ambition is futile”.

  3. 1. Not at all. “He said he supposed I must be very sad since Maman died, and I didn't say anything” (Camus 45). Mersault didn't care abo.ut his mother or the dog
2 “Her Highness refused to work” (Camus 30).
“A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so” (Camus 55).
“Marie said she’d stay and help Madame Masson with the dishes” (Camus 52).
    3. Mersault does not love her, but does not hate her either. And, he does not care about his marriage with Marie. Lastly, he think it won’t “make any difference” so “we could if she wanted to” (Camus 41).
    4. Camus dealt with the environment positively, “I'd left my window open, and the summer night air flowing over our brown bodies felt good” (Camus 35). However, the last scene, “The sea carried up a thick, fiery breath” (Caatively, mus 59). He dealt with the environment negatively.
    5. He must have been happy when he shot the Arab. He shot him about four times, and that means that he actually enjoyed it.
6.The lifestyle in Tangiers seems to be chill and relaxing. Mersault enjoys walking around the town. He also enjoys swimming at the beach with Masson and Marie. Good food and environment. But a little too hot.
    8. Mersault would definitely agree with “Ambition is futile”. He is way too pessimistic about life. He thinks that marriage is not important since you will die in the end. He doesn't care if he moves or not.

  4. “ I told old Salamon that he could get another dog, but he was right to point out to me that he was used to this one”( Camus 44), Mersault impacted in which he did not want to replace the dog.
“ Maman was buried now ... nothing had changed”(Camus 24), “ It was clear she was cheating on me. So I left her. But first I smacked her around” (Camus 30), “ “Still had sexual feelings for her”. But he wanted to punish her” (Camus 31).
Mersault does not care about marriage, he prefers to have the feelings rather than a symbol.
Most of the book, Mersault was enjoying or neutral about the environment, but he changed after the murder, “ It was burning, which I couldn’t stand anymore, I wouldn’t get the sun off me” (Camus 59), this tells me, Camus talks about the environment according to the situation.
I think it imply’s to the regret because the whole mood of the story change.
The Tangiers lifestyle is awesome. It seems appealing because the weather is perfect and it has a beach, what could be better. It is also windy from the beach, “ From inside the bungalows ... we could hear the rattling of plates and silverware” (Camus 52).
Marriage- “ Then she pointed out that marriage was a serious thing. I said, “No””(Camus 42).
    Authority- “ I didn’t like the cops” (Camus 36).
Mother- “Maman died today” (Camus 3).
Mersault would agree, because in his life he does not believe in the future, he believes more in the present.

  6. 1. Salamano's grief over his dog didn't impact Mersault at all. He yawned while Salmano was talking and when Salmono talked about Mersault's mother, Mersault didn't say anything.
    2. "The woman was still shrieking and Raymond was still hitting her" (Camus, 36).
“Marie said she’d stay and help Madame Masson with the dishes” (Camus, 52).
“A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so” (Camus, 35).
    3. Mersault has a sexual feeling toward Marie but doesn't love her. He things that marriage won't make any difference.
    4. I think Mersault deals with the environment neutrally because warm and relaxing weather made him feel good but when the Arab was trying to kill him, the heat from the sun annoyed him. "The light shot off the steel and it was like a long flashing blade cutting at my forehead" (Camus, 59).
    5. It means that he has no regrets toward the murdering. He wouldn't have shot four more times after already killing the Arab if he had some regrets.
    6. The lifestyle in Tangiers seems really appealing. The place sounds like tropical area where you will go for a vacation or touring. Especially, the humid weather makes you chill out. "I'd left my window open, and the summer night air flowing over our brown bodies felt good" (Camus, 35).
    7. Mother's death: “Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know” (Camus, 3).
Friendship: "I didn't mind being his pal, and he seemed set on it" (Camus, 33).
Marriage: "I explained to her that it didn't really matter and that if she wanted to, we could get married" (Camus, 41).
    8. Mersault will definitely agree with it because he had ambition when he was a student but it turned out to be nothing when he grew up. "When I was a student, I had lots of ambitions like that. But when I had to give up my studies I learned very quickly that none of it really mattered" (Camus, 41).

  7. 1.No, I don’t think Salamano was grief over his dog. Because Salamano used to beat his dog, but Mersault just like whatever he didn’t care about it.
    2. (1). “Meanwhile the girl was crying……Raymond asked “is that a legal, calling a man a pimp like that?” (Camus 36).
(2). “Marie said it was terrible and I didn’t say anything” (Camus 36).
(3). When Marie ask Mersault does he wanna marry with she, the answer from Mersault was “you can do whatever you want”

    3. Because he don’t see anything will change, and plus he don’t really care, also Mersault is not that like Mrie as much as Marie likes him.
    4. “the sea carried up a thick, fiery breath. It seemed to me as if the sky split open from one end to the other to rain down fire” (Camus 59). I think Camus deal with the environment negative, the way of he writing was always feel the weather in the bad way, and he also wrote Mersault in the negative way.
    5. In my opinion, I think he didn’t feel regret at all, he actually feel more comfortable with it. And plus he shot four times in total; therefore if he feel bad he won’t shot that many times.
    6. Describe the lifestyle in Tangiers. Does it seem appealing? Think of the environment, the city and the beach. How about the weather? Use one quote as support.
“ with every blade of light that flashed off the sand, from a bleached shell or a piece of broken glass, my jaws tightened. I walked for a long time” (Camus 57).
7.family- Maman’s death. Mersault didn’t even that sad about it.
Kissing- when Marie and him were kissing, but he think it doesn’t mean anything.
Marriage- he think marriage won’t change anything different.

8."Ambition is futile" he will totally are not agree with it, seems he do not care about his marriage or the place he is going to move and everything, so the ambition won’t work on Mersault.

  8. 1.  Does Salamano's grief over his dog impact Mersault?

Not really but Mersault learns about the things that he didn't know before about his dog when Salamano came over.

    2.  Pretend you are a Feminist critic.  There are abundant examples of misogyny; please cite 3 examples.

"And Her Highness refused to work" (Camus 30).
"Marie said she'd stay and help Madame Masson with the dishes" (Camus 52).
"That evening Marie came by to see me and asked me if I wanted to marry her. I said it didn't make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to" (Camus 41).

    3.  Why do you think Mersault doesn't care if he is married or not?

Mersault doesn't love Marie that much but doesn't hate her and he said "I said it didn't make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to" (Camus 41) which means he doesn't care about it.

    4.  Mersault, while not looking for an excuse, partially blames the murder on the environment.  What does this say about the way Camus deals with the environment?  Is it positive? Negative? Neutral?  Use a quote as support.

At the end of the part one, Camus dealt with the environment negatively "The sea carried up a thick, fiery breath" (Camus 59).

    5.  When Mersault commits the murder, he shatters "the harmony of the day, the exceptional beach where [he'd] been happy" (58).  Does this imply that he regrets his crime?

I think he must have been happy when he murdered Arab.

    6.  Describe the lifestyle in Tangiers.  Does it seem appealing?  Think of the environment, the city and the beach.  How about the weather?  Use one quote as support.

The lifestyle in Tangiers are nice and relaxing. Mersault enjoys living in there and also enjoys swimming with Marie and Masson. The weather in Tangiers is little too hot because "The sun was shining almost directly overhead onto the sand, and the glare in the water was unbearable" (Camus 52).

    7.  Cite three things Mersault is indifferent towards.

"Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don't know" (Camus 3). He don't remember when his mother died.
"I said it didn't make any difference" (Camus 41). He said this when Marie asked about the marriage.
"Marie said it was terrible but I didn't say anything. She asked me to go find a policeman, but I told her I didn't like cops" (Camus 36). He doesn't care about the girl was beaten up by Raymond and he doesn't like policeman.

    8.  "Ambition is futile".  Would Mersault agree or disagree?

I definitely he will agree with this because he doesn't care about marriage, and it is not important to him. He doesn't care about large event in the life.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1. He kind of thinks about it, because it reminds him of his mother. But moves on and makes it sound like he never really thought of his mother. This is showing that
    2. “She’d gotten her punishment now and he ought to be happy” (Camus 37)
“I answered the same way I had the last time, that it didn’t mean anything but that I probably didn’t love her” (Camus 41).
“Marie was jumping with joy and kept on saying what a beautiful day” (Camus 47).
    3. He doesn’t care about marrying, because he thinks that it wouldn’t make any difference, even if they marry. Also because, he does not really love her.
    4. I think Camus deals with the environment, neutrally. “The sea carried up a thick. Fiery breath. It seemed to me as if the sky split open from one end to the other to rain down fire” (Camus 59).
    5. It seems like he does regret his crime, but again, does not care so much about it. The action that he took next, “fired four more times” (Camus 59), shows that he is not concern about it.
    6. I would say that it’s not a good appealing place to live. Because, of its weather, it’s too hot and fights between the “Arabs”. “…my forehead was especially was hurting me, all the veins in it throbbing under the skin. It was this burning, which I couldn’t stand anymore” (Camus 58 – 59).
    7. Life – “I learned very quickly that none of it really mattered” (Camus 41).
Marriage (Love) – “I said it didn’t make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to” (Camus 41).
Mother – “I told her Maman died. She wanted to know how long ago, so I said, ‘Yesterday.’” (Camus 20).
    8. I think Mersault would agree with this. He thinks that whatever you do, no matter how happy you live, in the end, you would all di anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. In a way, Salamano's grief did affect Mersault but it did not last that long. The grief reminded Mersault of the death of his own mother but after that he just thought that he has to wake up early the next morning.
    2. “'I realized that she was cheating on me'” (Camus 30). “And Her Highness refused to work” (Camus 30). “But she was always telling me that things were so tight, that she couldn't get by on what I was giving her” (Camus 30).
    3. Mersault doesn't care about not just marriage but a lot of the large aspect of life. He knows that his is going to die someday so he thinks it doesn't matter if his involve in those large aspect or not.
    4. This tells us that Camus has a hard time dealing with the environment so it was negative for him. “It was this burning, which I couldn't stand anymore, that made me move forward” (Camus 59).
    5. He does regrets the crime he committed because he wanted to enjoy his time at the beach. Now that he has murder someone, everything will be different from now on.
    6. The lifestyle in Tangiers is great; warm beach and great weather. “The sun was shining almost directly overhead onto the sand, and the glare on the water was unbearable” (Camus 52). The environment of the city is totally different compare to the beach. In the city, you feel really crowded but at the beach you feel really free.
    7. Marriage: “'So why marry me, then?' she said. I explained to her that it didn't really matter and that if she wanted to, we could if she wanted to” (Camus 41).
Police: “I told her I didn't like cops” (Camus 36).
Mother: “Maman died today” (Camus 3).
    8. I think Mersault will agree with this because he believe that life is pointless, sooner or later we're all gonna die. He doesn't understand why people make big decision in their life.

    1. Mersault kind of though about it it, but it didn’t have impact on him. He told Salamano to get new dog, but Salamano refused it.

    2. “He’d beaten her till she bled” (Camus 31). “He’d beaten her till she bled” (Camus 31).
“Marie said she'd stay and help Madame Masson with the dishes" (Camus 52).
“A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so” (Camus 55).

    3. Mersault doesn’t care if he is not married or not, because he thinks that marriage would not change his life. Also it doesn’t matter for him to marry or not because in the end you are alone.

    4. Camus took environment positively, although Mersault committed murder because of sun. For example, “I'd left my window open, and the summer night air flowing over our brown bodies felt good” (Camus 35).

    5. No, Mersault does not regret for committing murder. He killed the Arab because of the sun. He even thinks that committing murder ruined his day.

    6. Living in Hokkaido makes want to go to Tangiers, because of “The sun was shining almost directly overhead onto the sand, and the glare on the water was unbearable” (Camus 52). Also I like the life style too.

    7. Respect → "Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don't know" (Camus 3)
    Love→“ It didn’t mean anything” (camus 41)

Marriage→“I said it didn’t make any difference” (Camus 41).

    8. Mersault would agree to the quote for sure, because he is careless. It is not like he is not nice or anything, but he has no interests in what normal people has interest.

  12. 1) No, I don’t think Salamano’s grief over his dog impact Mersault. Because someone used to beat his dog.
2)“Reymond was still hitting her. Marie said it was terrible and I didn’t say anything. She asked me to go find a policeman, but I told her I didn’t like cops (Camus 36).
“I answered the same way I had the last time, that it didn’t mean anything but that I probably didn’t love her” (Camus 41).
“‘So why marry me, then?’ she said. I explained to her that it didn’t really matter and that if she wanted to, we could get married” (Camus 41).

    3) “‘So why marry me, then?’ she said. I explained to her that it didn’t really matter and that if she wanted to, we could get married” (Camus 41). He doesn’t care if he’s married or not because he doesn’t love her, and eventually he’s going to die, so he only does what he want.
4)I think Camus deals with the environment neutrally. He described the sound of the wave as a human, even they are lazy but the sun is still there with the shinny light as usual. “The sound of the waves was even lazier, more drawn out than at noon, It was the same sun, the same light still shining on the same sand as before” (Camus 58).
    5) I think he was happy about it because he shot that Arab four times. If he feels guilty then he won’t shoot that many times. I feel like he was shooting him just for fun.
    6) In Tangiers, the weather is sunny, dry, and really hot. “already bright with sun, hit mu like a slap in the face” (Camus 47). Environment is bit danger because some people have guns for killing.
7)1”Maman died today. Or Yesterday maybe, I don’t know” (Camus 3).
2“ I had a hard time getting up, because I was tired from the day before. While I was shaving, I wondered what I was going to do and I decided to go for a swim” (Camus 19). This quote is when his mom died, he just went to swim in the beach and play with his girlfriend.
3 When Reymond beat Marie terribly, she told Mersault to call policeman but he didn’t call them.
    8) He agree with “Ambition is Futile”. “When I was a student, I had lots of ambitions like that. But when I had to give up my studies I learned very quickly that none of it really mattered” (Camus 41).

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. It doesn’t seem to impact Mersault because “at one point he yawned” (Cumus 45). But he still showed respect by listening to Salamano’s stories and offering her to stay.

    2. The quote, “I explained to her that it didn’t really matter and that if she wanted to, we could get married” (Camus 41) shows how he doesn’t really care about her.
“ The woman was still shrieking and Raymond was still hitting her. Marie said it was terrible and I didn’t say anything. She asked me to go find a policeman, but I told her I didn’t like cops” (Camus 36). Mersault doesn’t care even if a woman was getting beaten up.
After all the beating, “I told him it seemed to me that she’d gotten her punishment now and he ought to be happy” (Camus 37). They feel like they did the right thing.

    3. Since he only thinks about the moment he is in and doesn’t think about the future, he doesn’t really care if he marries are not. He doesn’t care to think what it would be like to marry her.

    4. I think Camus deals environment neutrally. At the beginning it seemed like Mersault enjoyed the environment, however some part shows how nature makes him go out of his mind. The quote, “this burning, which I couldn’t stand anymore, that made me move forward” (Camus 59) exemplifies how he blames the nature to be the reason he killed the Arab. He accepts the environment by how it is by enjoying the good weather and disliking the hot sun.

    5. Yes, he realizes that he did something and regrets for doing it. He said that his good day has broken down because of this event. Since he only sees the moment and the day important and works hard to get that simple happiness, he regrets by breaking it.

    6. It seems to be a really nice place with the beach and the warm weather. Time goes by slowly and people there are also chill. They had “lunchtime whenever you were hungry” (Camus 52). Although it seems to be too hot with “the sun shining almost directly overhead onto the sand, and the glare on the water was unbearable” (Camus 52), I like warm places so I would love to be there for vacations.

    7. He is indifferent about
    - Change in life/future, “I said that people never change their lives, that in any case one life was as good as another and that I wasn’t dissatisfied with mine here at all” (Camus 41)
    - Marriage, “I said it didn’t make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to” (Camus 41).
    - Authority, “She asked me to go find a policeman, but I told her I didn’t like cops” (Camus 36).

    8. He would definitely agree to this statement. He doesn’t look at the future or the past and he doesn’t have any desire towards his future. He does not have ambition. The only thing he cares about is immediate happiness.

  14. 1. Salamano's grief over his dog did not impact Mersalut since Mersalut yawned when Salamano was talking. This shows that he has no interest.

    2. "I didn't like having to explain to them, so I just shut up, smoked a cigarette, and looked at the sea" (Camus 54).
"So I left her. But first I smacked her around" (Camus 30).
"A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn't mean anything" (Camus 35).

    3. Mersault doesn't care if he is married or not since he only thinks about now. He does not care about his future or hopes.

    4. Environment plays an important role in Camus's story since characters are affected a lot. "The schoring blade slashed at my eyelashes and stabbed at my stinging eyes. That's when everything began to reel" (Camus 59). In this story, environment is neutral because sometime it calms down people's feeling and sometime it is the cause of an anger or terror.

    5. I think Mersault regrets his crime because the sound of gun had destroyed the quietness and pecefullness of the beach.

    6. In my opinion, Tangiers does not seem appealing. Although there is a nice beach, it has a humid weather and I could not escape from it. "If you go slowly, you risk getting sunstroke. But if you go too fast, you work up a sweat and then catch a chill inside a church" (Camus 17).

    7. "Maman was buried now, that I was going back to work, and that, really, nothing had changed" (Camus 24).
    "I said I wasn't expecting anything, and besides I didn't like cops" (Camus 37).
"I couldn't see any reason to change my life" (Camus 41).

    8. I think Mersalut would agree to this idea because he is careless about his life.
